Hood scoops are truly functional thanks to a Cervantis underhood add-on system. Visit my Web site at www.cardomain.com/id/medmann41

THE THING (VW)
(Bill and Ginny Amos, Tampa)
The Thing (type 181) was manufactured by VW in 1973 and 1974. The vehicle is essentially a Beetle with a different body. The Thing was purchased new (1973) in Honolulu, Hawaii. I continued to drive the Thing when I was in San Francisco and the Washington, D.C. area. Since the heater in the '73 was a gas-fired and rather temperamental, winter-time driving in Maryland was often a cold experience. It has been a fun car to drive, especially with the top down. For the past several years, the Thing has spent most of its time in the garage. Only recently have I once again begun driving it on a daily basis. I have no idea how many miles are on the vehicle. The odometer stopped working several years ago at 16,787 miles. The only major work that has been done is a paint job a few years ago and new carburetor this year. Not bad for a 36-year-old vehicle.
